How to Get Started with Home Candle Making
Posted on January 31st, 2010 No commentsThings seem to go in cycles, and what was once old becomes new again. I think we’re seeing that with home candle making. I recently visited a page (Home Candle Making) that made it pretty clear.
It used to be that making candles was a necessary household chore, at least if the family wanted to be able to have any light after the sun went down. Home candle making used to be a rather unpleasant task. For centuries, the most common candles were made from tallow, a processed animal fat. Tallow candles couldn’t “hold a candle” to today’s candles (sorry – couldn’t resist).
Candle making moved out of the home with the development of paraffin and the ability to mass produce candles. Once people could get cheap commercially made candles, home candle making fell by the wayside.
As you well know, incandescent electric lights have become the preferred way to light our homes, but people still enjoy using candles. However, most people no longer make their own.
Candles are used is today in rituals, such as religious services, weddings, and of course birthday parties. People also use them in their homes because they enjoy the ambience created by the flickering candlelight. And a romantic dinner wouldn’t be the same without candle light. In fact, just about all you need to do to make any dinner romantic is to add candles.
So even though we no longer need candles, we continue to enjoy using them. However, for many years most people were content to use commercially produced candles. That's starting to change. This wonderful craft is increasing in popularity and hobbyist candle makers are producing delightful candles that are every bit as good or better than commercially made candles.
In fact, in many ways a homemade candle is superior to a purchased one because the chandler (candle maker) can personalize their creations.
A very simple way to make your own candle is to use the sheet wax and a prepared wick. This is great for beginners to try their hand at candle making. The sheets are so pliable that you can form a candle from one by rolling around a wick.
Once you try that method, you can expand your repertoire to other techniques. A good place to find out how is: How to Make Your Own Candles. While you're there, be sure to sign up for their free candle making mini-course.
If you think you're interested in trying candle making, probably the best resource I can point you to is Home Candle Making Made Easy. That ebook is filled with insider tips and secrets that will make you an expert in no time.
